JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision from the Interment Supervisor, this position is responsible for operating digging equipment and preparing graves for burial, driving 1-1/2 ton to 3-ton dump truck to transport dirt, stones, trash, tools and light equipment. To and from designated locations within the cemetery; operating all other ground maintenance equipment; laying out gravesites and unloading markers/headstones; monitoring performance of irrigation equipment; planting and performing routine maintenance on trees/shrubbery; performing minor facility maintenance such as painting and repairing grounds equipment; and performs other job-related duties, as assigned. JOB DUTIES: • Operates grave digging equipment such as tractors equipped with backhoe attachment and front-end loader; digs graves according to required dimensions, removing dirt and dumping beside grave or in a dump truck; and may operate a backhoe, as needed. • Drives 1-1/2 to 3-ton dump truck to transport dirt, stone, trash, tools and light equipment to and from designated locations within the cemetery; operates all other grounds maintenance equipment to include utility vehicles, riding mowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, earth tampers and other equipment /tools, as needed; and performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance to equipment such as, changing tires, oil changes and replacing filters to ensure proper operation. • Unloads markers/headstones from truck, by hand or with forklift; inspects markers for damage and transports from storage to gravesites; assists in setting markers/headstones in containment boxes of the grave liners; for graves without a grave liner, assists in setting markers/headstones to ensure alignment using lines, measuring tape and level, and repairs sunken graves and either re-sods or re-seeds gravesites, as needed. • Job duty bullet #3Aligns gravesites with other established graves or according to specified dimensions; lowers casket into grave and/or grave liner and replaces dirt over gravesites either by hand, dump truck or front end loader, tampering as necessary with a hand or powered tamp; and removes excess dirt and transports to dump area. • Performs miscellaneous janitorial tasks in restrooms, utility rooms and administrative buildings; and mops floors, cleans restrooms and replenishing restroom supplies, as needed. • Monitors performance of irrigation equipment to ensure efficient water usage; and utilizes best practices techniques, as provided by the irrigation system supplier. • Plants, transplants and performs routine maintenance on trash/shrubbery and applies compound to trees where limbs are removed; rakes leaves and grass to present a neat appearance of grounds; sprigs and sods grass; broadcasts seed and applies fertilizer and lime by hand or mechanical devices; and cleans markers using a power washer. • Performs minor facility maintenance such as painting, incidental carpentry task, and patches gutters, storm sewers and traps, using asphalt, gravel or shales. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Knowledge of: • Basic principles and practices of grounds maintenance • Proper use of power and hand tools • Basic equipment maintenance • Common occupational safety practices and procedures • Use of plumb lines and stakes • Sprinkler systems and water pumps Skill in: • Operating a 1-1/2 to 3-ton dump truck • Operating tractors, backhoes, riding mowers, auger, bush hog, and other associated equipment used in ground maintenance • Utilizing various carpentry tools and equipment, such as a hammer, drill, chainsaw, weed wacker, and push mower, etc. Ability to: • Learn the procedures in performing burials and marker setting • Assist families and the public in locating specific gravesites • Lift/carry up to 90 pounds; and push/pull up to 50 pounds (e.g., grave markers and grounds equipment) • Identify and address routine grounds maintenance issues, including safety concerns • Prepare and maintain records • Work within the outdoors and associated elements on a continuous basis • Work independently, under minimal supervision This individual will be operating a gator and a tractor for daily duties and interments.
