PLYMOUTH, MA — A Plymouth boy celebrated his fifth birthday by finding a four-inch megalodon tooth at a South Carolina beach, reported Newsweek. Brayden Drew discovered the black tooth fossil while vacationing at Myrtle Beach, said his family. The megalodon, an extinct species of shark, is considered to be the largest shark to ever live, reaching lengths of up to 58.7 feet long. "It was my son's fifth birthday on the 20th," Drew's mom, Marissa, told Newsweek. "We were on vacation down at Myrtle for the second year in a row. He was digging in the sand and found it!" Drew's family is planning to frame the tooth and hang it in their house. They also said they plan to keep looking for other fossils in the future. South Carolina is known for its fossils, and many megalodon specimens have been found on the state's beaches. The tooth Drew found is considered "the ultimate prize" for many local fossil hunters. According to Britannica, Megalodon fossils are estimated to be between 23.03 million and 2.59 million years old.
