For what its worth:
I am a gun owner. I am a veteran. I am a hunter. I have no issue with forearms. I have never once in my 64 years felt the urge to carry a side arm as a civilian. There has never been a moment in my life (outside of military service) where I wished I had a gun on my side. I have never in my life regretted not carrying a side arm.
To be honest, I think a side arm brings a false sense of security. In my opinion there is a higher chance of someone getting injured accidentally by a side arm than there is of someone ever needing it to defend themself with it. I do admit that that there is a sense of power that comes with holding a weapon. But holding that weapon does not make a person safer. I keep my guns locked in a safe. Out of reach of my grandchildren. That is how I feel most secure.
Lastly, imagine if it became common place in each state for people to carry a firearm. The number of accidental and deliberate shootings would skyrocket. Police would be at a HUGE disadvantage when approaching a situation. Civilians and criminals would loom alike. Guns do not bring peace. Maturity brings peace. Sidearms are pure machismo.
That is my two cents. But then again, what the hell do I know...?
