This may be a bit long winded, so please bear with me.
I have until June 10th. to obtain a manual wheel chair,( wouldn't say no to an electric,) but a manual is more than adequate, before I'm discharged from the rehabilitation center, where I'm currently residing. Due to the refusal of my insurance (Trillium/Medicaid) to pay for more than 20 days of rehabilitation or a wheel chair, I'm posting this.
This is despite the prognosis of 4 MD's handling my wound care for the amputation of half of my left foot and the big toe of my right foot. I've had open wounds on both of my feet since mid Dec.. Walking is not only painful, but detrimental to my feet healing. I learned this first hand earlier this month, when I had to have a second amputation on my right foot, because of an infection that had gotten into the bones of my foot, brought on by being on my feet too much.
It wasn't due to my lack of commitment to my own recovery. It's because I had basic daily tasks that pretty much everyone does. May not seem like a lot of standing and walking, but it was enough to widen the open wounds on my feet and make them more susceptible to infection.
This is all relevant to why it is important that I stay off my feet most of the time, for about 3 months, possibly longer.
It's a step towards the feasibility of gainful employment rather than trying to live on less than $800.00 a month; not to mention a little more self respect. Plus, it would probably take three years of waiting after an application and 2 appeals. If I'm forced to bear my weight when I leave here, it's not only possible but probable, that I'll end up with more of my feet being cut off or event some of one or both of my legs.
Asking for help from strangers isn't easy, but sometimes it's necessary.
Look forward to hearing from you. Otherwise thanks for reading this and have a blessed day:)
