About Women's Equality Day The women’s suffrage movement was a decades-long fight to win the right to vote for women in the United States. It took activists and reformers nearly 100 years to win that right, and the campaign was not easy. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was finally ratified, enfranchising all American women and declaring for the first time that they, like men, deserve all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Women's Equality Day is celebrated each year in the United States on August 26th to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment. This year we will celebrate the 100 year anniversary of women getting the vote. Evansville's Women's Equality Day event began in 2004, and over the years has featured prominent speakers discussing the engagement of women in the political process, women in government, gender stereotypes, and more.
