Description
Colome, this extraordinary estate, owned by Donald Hess of the Hess Collection, is located up in the Andes in the Argentine province of Salta, close to the Bolivian border. A relatively isolated location with several hectares of ancient, twisted who-knows-what grapevines, some of which were planted in 1854. A further 11 hectares were planted with Malbec vines imported from Bordeaux pre-phylloxera and planted on their own roots. Hess is now planting more disciplined, modern vineyards higher and higher (got to keep that claim to be the highest…) and all are farmed biodynamically. So you have ancient vines, plus all that extremely intense sunlight in a completely unpolluted atmosphere, plus the sort of cool nights you get at between 2,200 and 3,000 meters above sea level (amazing!) – all leading to a creation of an exceptional wine.93 points James Suckling"Lots of concentration here. This is packed with dense, ripe black cherries, damsons and iodine. Floral and spicy accents, too. Full-bodied, very big and dense with a tannin structure of grandeur. Yet, there’s no lack of mid-palate detail. Lay it down in your cellar. Better after 2023."
Jancis Robinson"From the Upper Calchaquí Valley. Old vines – some of the blend comes from older parcels (planted between 60 and 150 years ago), others are newer parcels. This bottling is a blend of their vineyards. The mid-range Malbec from this innovative producer.Very distinctive cordite nose. Massive and lively mountain character. Pure fruit. Long and savoury. Quite different from Mendoza fruit with firework impression. Stony dry finish. GV" 17/20 points.
