By Steve Burger, WNIN May 27, 2021 Due to the nature of the incident, we are providing a link to the video rather than embedding it here. WARNING: Offensive language and violence can be seen and heard in the body cam video clip. In the bodycam footage provided by Evansville police, EPD officer Nathan Jones is interviewing a man who said he had just been involved in a domestic dispute. During the interview, a gold Honda sedan pulled up the scene and a female, identified as 18 year old Maeling Smith, got out and is seen screaming at Jones and the male subject. Jones orders Smith to get back in the car, but she returns and continues screaming. At that point, Officer Jones walked toward Smith, who retreated to the car. Jones then ordered Smith out of the car and tried to pull her out of it. Smith can be seen putting the vehicle in gear with her other hand and Officer Jones is knocked to the ground and dragged nearly a block before he is tossed on the street. Smith is charged with Battery Against a Public Safety Official and Resisting Arrest. She has been released from the Vanderburgh County Jail on $1,500 bond. It happened early Saturday morning on Evansville's South Side. City Council voted to transfer funds to help pay expenses related to unexepcted new hires in the department.
