PITTSBURGH PA — In a play generating national headlines, the inept Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday botched what should have been a routine ground-ball out.
With a runner on second, Cubs shortstop Javier Baez hit a ball fielded by Pirates third baseman Erik Gonzalez. He threw the ball to Pirates first baseman Will Craig, but the throw took Craig off of the bag.
All Craig had to do was tag the base to get Baez out. But when Baez started running back toward home plate, Craig tried to chase him down. As that occurs, a Cubs player who was on second base began running the bases. Craig tried to throw the ball to catcher Michael Perez to get the runner out, but the run scores and gives the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Baez, meanwhile, realized that no Pirates player is covering first base. So he began running on the base path and ultimately wound up at second base.
The Cubs dugout erupted in laughter at the Pirates inability to execute what should have been a simple play. The Cubs ultimately won the game, 4-3.
