Woburn Police Warn Of Phone Scammer Impersonating Sergeant

WOBURN, MA — Woburn police warned Monday of a phone scammer claiming to be a sergeant with the department. "We have received some calls today from residents inquiring about the legitimacy of phone calls they received," the police said. "The caller indicates that the resident was supposed to be a witness in court and did not show up which angered the judge." While the residents did not report being asked for money, that is often where scam calls like this lead, the department said. "Follow-up calls often indicate a warrant will be or has been issued and payment must be made to remove the warrant," the police said. "Cash payment or gift card payment are often requested. If you receive any call like this it is a scam, hang up and never give any payment in any form." Phone scammers often pretend to be law enforcement or government officials and demand money.
