Stamford Pride is a nonprofit comprised of 10 board members that come from all walks of life. The group formed in late 2019 with the shared goal of celebrating LGBTQ+ diversity in the city they live and work in, and incorporated as a nonprofit in 2021. Stamford Pride will kick off LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June by illuminating Stamford's Old Town Hall, located at 175 Atlantic St., in rainbow colors. Old Town Hall will proudly display the lights every night at 9 p.m. starting June 1 until June 2. The pride lights will resume on June 6 and continue through the rest of the month. The rainbow pride flag will be ceremoniously raised at Stamford Government Center at 888 Washington Blvd. by Mayor David Martin and members of Stamford Pride on June 1 at 12 p.m. The rainbow flag has been used as a symbol for the LGBTQ+ community since the late 1970s. "I am pleased that Stamford Pride is working to support the city's LGBTQ+ residents, workers, and visitors," Martin said in a news release. "I am proud of Stamford's commitment to our LGBTQ+ community as we acknowledge and celebrate their many contributions to our wonderful city." Several events will be produced by Stamford Pride during the month of August to celebrate LGBTQ+ history and culture including an exclusive early screening at The Avon Theatre Film Center of, Ma Belle, My Beauty, an independent film that explores the dynamics of a polyamorous, interracial relationship. The Ferguson Library will be hosting a literary speaking engagement, drag storytime featuring performers Anita Manager, Robin Richards, and Frankie Cyanide, and a designated LGBTQ+ literature and film section. Drag brunch featuring local drag performers will be held at Hudson Social on Bedford Street. Stamford Pride will partner with local GSAs and Lighthouse, an LGBTQ+ youth group in Stamford, for a special art project and a youth pride café event at Honey Joe's Family Coffeehouse. "We want to show Stamford as the warm and accepting community it is and these events accomplish that goal in a very visible way," said President of Stamford Pride, John Varamo, in a news release. "The board of Stamford Pride has worked tirelessly over the past year to put together programming that highlights LGBTQ+ diversity, culture, and history, and we believe the community will truly enjoy it." Further details of August pride events, including dates and times will be released shortly. Stamford Pride's 2021 programming is supported by the City of Stamford's Arts and Culture Grant.
