MORRISTOWN, NJ — Gov. Phil Murphy nominated Morristown's town attorney to become a New Jersey Superior Court judge. Vij Pawar has served as director of law to Mayor Tim Dougherty since 2010 and is also a member of the Morris School District's Board of Education. "Vij's appointment as a Judge to the Superior Court speaks volumes about his leadership tenure for the past decade here in Morristown," Dougherty said in a statement. "His historic appointment will be a loss for Morristown but an incredible gain for the citizens of New Jersey." Pawar's nomination will head to the Senate Judiciary Committee and then the full State Senate. Confirmed nominees get sworn in for an initial seven-year term. New Jersey has about 460 judges on the superior court, which handles criminal, civil and family law cases while also reviewing municipal-court decisions. He is a current member and former trustee of the Morris County Bar Association, a former Morristown municipal prosecutor, a former Morristown Zoning Board member and a current trustee at New Jersey City University.
