Join us as we learn about Philadelphia’s Black history from before William Penn’s arrival through the end of the nineteenth century. The tour will follow a mostly chronological route as we slowly make our way from the Delaware River to 6th & South Streets. Highlights of the tour will include visits to the Arch Street Meeting House and the President’s House Memorial on the site of the home where George and Martha Washington illegally held people in slavery. The talk will be illustrated with relevant art works and documents.
Tour leader Amy Cohen taught African American history at Masterman High School for eight years and currently serves as the Director of Education for History Making Productions, a local documentary film company. She is also a monthly columnist for Hidden City.
