SOMERVILLE, MA — Demonstrators and elected officials will rally for safety improvements along an infamous stretch of roadway in Somerville. Activists will walk what they call the "Corridor of Death," from 530 Mystic Avenue to Broadway and McGrath Highway, at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The demonstration will conclude with speeches from Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, State Reps. Christine Barber and Mike Connolly, Mayor Joseph Curtatone and City Councilors Matt McLaughlin and Jesse Clingan. Demonstrators are calling for accelerated safety improvements on McGrath and Mystic Avenue, a crosswalk on Blakeley Avenue, traffic-calming measures and sound barriers along I-93. The area has seen several hit-and-runs in recent years. In April, a 72-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck while crossing McGrath Highway from the Stop & Shop, and two people were fatally hit on Mystic Avenue in 2019. MassDOT has committed to a road diet and resurfacing project along the McGrath Highway corridor.
