WAUKESHA, WI— Waukesha North High School went on high alert status Tuesday morning after police received a report of a man with a handgun nearby. Waukesha police arrested an unidentified man on suspicion of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct while armed with a dangerous weapon, police said. Police received a report of a person waving a handgun from a car driving in the 20000 block of Michigan Avenue, police said. A teacher saw the incident and alerted staff at nearby Lowell Elementary School at dropoff time and North High School as students were in class, police said. Waukesha North was placed on "secure" status, which meant no students or staff were allowed outside and all outside doors were locked, police said. It's unclear whether Lowell also went into lockdown or when North High lifted its alert. The high school's resource officer got into her squad car and followed the car with the gunman, police said. Police stopped the car at the intersection of Northview Road and University Drive. "We want to thank the alert teacher at Waukesha North and the School District of Waukesha for the vigilance of training in school safety protocols," police said.
