NEW YORK CITY — The crowded, suddenly not-too-far-from-Election-Day race for New York City's next mayor has a new frontrunner: Kathryn Garcia. At least that's according to a new poll conducted by Emerson College and PIX11 News that Politico obtained and published Tuesday afternoon. Garcia had the support of 21 percent of 570 likely voters recently surveyed, Politico reported. She previously polled in single digits in the Democratic primary field. "A lot of people said this couldn't be done, but I'll be here for all NYers and that's what this campaign is about," Garcia tweeted. "The poll that matters most is on June 22nd — let's do this and make this government work for everyone." The poll represents the first time a Democratic candidate other than Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams or entrepreneur Andrew Yang had the top position. Garcia spent decades in city government, most recently as sanitation commissioner, and consistently won praise — even from her fellow candidates — for her experience. She parlayed her reputation for competence and effectiveness into high-profile endorsements from the New York Times and New York Daily News editorial boards. Just four weeks remain before New York City's primary polls close. Read the full Politico report here.
