PUYALLUP, WA — County leaders are recognizing the Pierce County Library System for 75 years of amazing service. At the Pierce County Council's meeting Tuesday afternoon, council members and Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier took a moment to officially recognize the library system's anniversary with a resolution celebrating its many decades supporting Pierce County readers. That resolution, Resolution No. R2021-84, passed unanimously. It reads, in part: "We recognize and congratulate the Pierce County Library System on their 75th Diamond Anniversary for 75 years of service to the citizens of Pierce County and residents are encouraged to check out the digital collection of books, audiobooks, magazines and more at piercecountylibrary.org."The Pierce County Library System was founded in 1946. At the time, it had just seven buildings and served roughly 55,000 Pierce County residents. Since then, it has grown into the fourth largest library system in the state, with 20 libraries serving over 620,000 people. "Happy birthday to the Library System really means a big thank you to Pierce County communities for the true honor of being the community's choice for the discovery and exchange of information and ideas and to spark success for residents for 75 years!" said Library Executive Director Georgia Lomax in a news release celebrating the anniversary. "The communities have transformed a lot since 1946 and the Library has changed along with them to provide services meeting their most important library needs."
