NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has nominated Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas to serve as a judge on the New York State Court of Appeals. Singas, a Democrat, has to be confirmed by the state Senate before taking the seat on New York's highest court for a 14-year term. If confirmed, she would replace Justice Leslie Stein, who is retiring in June. Singas would be one of seven judges on the court's panel. "As district attorney, Singas has championed access to justice for all, including creation of an Immigrant Affairs Office to focus on crimes against immigrants," Cuomo said in announcing his court picks. "She dedicated unprecedented resources to restorative justice work through the creation of the Community Partnership Program to match those in need of services with the tools they need to better integrate back to the community post-incarceration." Singas has served as Nassau's district attorney since 2015, when she replaced Kathleen Rice, who was elected to the House of Representatives. Prior to becoming the head prosecutor of the county, Singas was the chief assistant district attorney and the head of the county's first Special Victims Bureau. Before coming to Nassau County, Singas was an assistant district attorney in the Queens County District Attorney's Office from 1991 to 2006. She earned a J.D. from Fordham Law School and a B.A. in political science from Barnard College at Columbia University.
