GARDEN CITY, NY — According to reports, investigators have determined that the Garden City house fire that claimed the lives of three family members earlier this month was likely caused by a cigarette.
According to Newsday, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's investigation into the blaze found that it was accidental, and most likely started by someone smoking a cigarette on the first floor of the home. The investigation is still ongoing.
The fire began around 5:30 a.m. on May 6 and quickly engulfed the majority of the home. The blaze killed 18-year-old Molly Madigan, and her parents Joseph and Gail. Molly had recently been accepted to the NYU Steinhardt School of Music, which she was planning to attend in the fall.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the surviving adult children of the Madigan family. You can donate by clicking here.
