WOODBRIDGE, VA — A Spotsylvania man has been charged in connection with the October 2020 killing of Brian Trotter, a Triangle resident. The suspect, Robert Coltrain, was originally arrested in Miami after authorities said they found a body in the trunk of his car. Brian Trotter was originally reported as missing on Oct. 17, 2020, according to the Prince William County Police Department. He was last seen leaving his home in Triangle to travel to Washington D.C with Coltrain. In a news release, the Prince William County Police Department said that Trotter and Coltrain were friends. They also noted that there was originally no indication of foul play in Trotter's disappearance. Read more: Hip Hop Artist From Triangle Found Dead In Trunk In Florida On October 25, 2020, the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash near Miami involving Coltrain. When Florida troopers investigated the crash, they claimed they found Trotter's body in the trunk of Coltrain's car. Coltrain was arrested in connection with Trotter's death. Authorities said Trotter suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was later ruled a homicide by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's office. Trotter's death was initially investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department until authorities determined that the killing occurred in Prince William County. On May 24, homicide detectives in Prince William County received arrest warrants for Coltrain. Coltrain is now charged with murder and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony. His court date is scheduled for July 26, 2021. He is currently being held in Florida and awaiting extradition to Virginia.
