Man Rescued From Burning Car By Anne Arundel County Officer

GLEN BURNIE, MD — Last week, Jeff McGuire found himself staring death in the face. He was involved in a crash on I-97 that sparked a car fire. The passenger side was in flames and the driver's side door of his Honda Accord was pinned shut. There was no way out. Suddenly, McGuire felt a hand grab him and drag him to safety. Anne Arundel County Police Officer Patrick Hannigan came upon the wreckage and without hesitation, sprinted to McGuire's burning vehicle. "I saw the car and the only thing I thought was I need to get this person out," Hannigan told WJZ. If it wasn't for the officer, McGuire likely wouldn't be here today. "He changed my life in a lot of different aspects and gave me a different outlook," McGuire said. "I shouldn't be walking away alive at all and I am and I'm grateful for what he did." McGuire contacted Hannigan to thank him and left a message, but really wanted to meet in person to show just how truly grateful he was. They met at police headquarters in Millersville and shared a heartfelt hug. The officer explained that he became a cop to help others and save lives. McGuire managed to walk away from the crash with bruising to his arm and abdomen. Watch their reunion here.
