Description

MANCHESTER, CT — Plans are in the works to install "pedestrian actuated rectangular rapid flashing beacons," or RRFBs, at two locations on Main Street later this summer. That's a fancy terms for lighted crosswalks. RRFB's are designed to alert motorists to an intended crossing with flashing LED beacons which are activated by a pedestrian push button. The RRFB's are also equipped with lights that directly illuminate the crossing at night, officials said. The new crossings are proposed at the Main Street/Myrtle Street/Brainard Place intersection and the Main Street/Birch Street/Locust Street intersection. They come with upgraded adjacent sidewalk ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities standards. The project is estimated to cost $163,800 and is 100 percent funded by the state of Connecticut through the Community Connectivity Program. Project plans are available for viewing online at http://engineering1.townofmanchester.org/index.cfm/construction-projects/main-st-ped- improvements/Questions or comments may be directed to the Engineering office at (860) 647-3158 or via email at [email protected]. After bids, the work can start in the summer and be finished by the fall, officials said. Click here to see the full plans.
