HAMMOND, IN — Kyrin Carter, a 12-year-old boy with autism who went missing from his Hammond home on May 15, was found dead in the Little Calumet River on Monday night, police confirmed Tuesday morning. Kyrin was last seen on May 15 at about 12:35 p.m. After days of searching, officials decided to focus their efforts on the Little Calumet River near where Kyrin was last seen. By stopping the flow of water into the river on Friday, a volunteer on Monday was able to spot the young boy's body just a few hundred feet from where he was last seen alive. The Lake County Coroner's Office confirmed the body was Kyrin Carter after a dive team was called in. In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Hammond officials said they do not believe the death was a result of foul play, but are waiting on an autopsy to confirm the cause and manner of death. Officials and family thanked the hundreds of volunteers who aided in the search for Kyrin since he was reported missing.
