Evansville firefighters responded to an alarm at the hospital on Mary Street at about 6:20 this (Mon) morning.
Central Dispatch then received a call from Deaconess saying there was a fire in the emergency room.
In a release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said an employee used an extinguisher to put out the fire before firefighters arrived.
EFD crews used fans to remove smoke from the area.
Larson said the fire was set by a patient who ignited items in a linen basket and walked out of the hospital.
EPD quickly apprehended the nearby suspect. There was no word on the suspect's identity.
Larson said the nurse that discovered and extinguished the fire was treated in the emergency room.
