We wrote to you about this commitment on March 25 and our confidence is strong, as vaccines for our middle and high school students are now available, and infection rates are falling throughout the region and state. We are emerging stronger, together, from this terrible pandemic, and we are looking forward to having students, staff, and teachers back in school full-time in the Fall at all grades. We are writing, on behalf of the School Board and District Leadership, to reiterate  our commitment to a full, five-days-a-week in-person school schedule in the Fall. We wrote to you about this commitment Back to School! We expect the vast majority of BUSD students to return to school, in-person, on August 16, 2021. Our school staff are looking forward to welcoming your students back to a normal bell schedule. There will be appropriate health and safety measures in place, and we will communicate the details of these measures after staff reviews the updates to public health guidance we expect to receive this summer. Independent Study We anticipate that a small number of students will require a remote learning option in the Fall.  As of last week, there is emerging but not-yet-final guidance from the state that Independent Study will serve as this remote learning option in California.  We will share more details when we have them, including how enrollment in Independent Study will be handled. Contingency Plans We are drawing upon our experience of this past year in order to have contingency plans at the ready. We are well aware that, even if the worst of the pandemic appears to be behind us, we may still face the possibility of a resurgence of the virus, or confront other challenges such as natural disasters. We have developed scenarios and potential responses. All of our contingency planning begins with the fundamental assumption that all campuses will be fully open for students to return to a five-day-a-week, in-person schedule.  We are drawing upon our experience of this past year in order to have contingency plans at the ready. LCAP and Budget Community Workshops this Week We are not only planning for the coming school year, we are also in the midst of developing our next three-year Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).  The community is warmly invited to join District leadership at two community workshops this week. This is an opportunity for community members, especially those who aren't already involved in committees, to provide feedback and ask questions as we work together to support the success of all of our students.
