PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK (MAY 2021)—What do you get when you add a teaspoon of kindness, an ounce of respect, and an infinite amount of friendship all together? A bake sale worth celebrating! On Friday, May 21, South Salem third-graders from Mrs. Katz's class whipped up some treats for one of their classmates whose father recently passed away after his battle with cancer. "The Port Washington community is exactly that; a community," said Port Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Hynes. "The work that our young students have done in support of their classmate speaks volumes to the work we do daily in the district to foster a sense of respect and camaraderie amongst our students." Tables were lined with delicious treats, baked goods and refreshing drinks for the community to enjoy. The fact that all proceeds would go to the American Cancer Society made it all the more sweet. As a result of their hard work, these determined young bakers raised an impressive $1,600. "The Port Washington School District, and me personally, could not be more proud of these students and their display of community at such a young age," added Mrs. Katz.
