WESTPORT, CT — A Westport man accused of downloading child pornography turned himself in at the Westport Police Department over the weekend, according to police. In a news release, Lt. David Wolf said the department's detective bureau received information in December that a town resident was possibly downloading child pornography onto his electronic devices. According to Wolf, detectives determined the IP address of the devices being utilized to download the suspected images came from a residence in town, and officers subsequently obtained a search warrant to search the computers and electronic devices at the home of Michael Newman, 65, of Westport. A second search warrant was also granted to search the computer and electronic devices at Newman's office in Westport, Wolf said. "During an examination of the devices that were seized," Wolf said in a news release, "images of suspected child pornography allegedly downloaded by Michael Newman were located." Based on their investigation, police obtained a warrant for Newman's arrest and he turned himself in at the department Friday evening, Wolf said. Newman was charged with obscenity, third-degree possession of child pornography and promoting a minor in obscene performance. He was released after posting a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in court this week.
