Memorial Day Flags Honor Bowie Vets, Leaders, Pandemic Victims

BOWIE, MD — Bowie will recognize its veterans, leaders and coronavirus victims with a field of flags this Memorial Day. The new display is called the "Field of Honor." Residents can buy a 3-foot by 5-foot flag to respect: A veteran or current military service memberProfessionals, like health care or public safety workers, who have helped us through the coronavirus pandemicAn individual or group that supports the communitySomeone who lost their life to COVID-19 or another tragedy "Each [U.S.] flag ... will tell a story," the town said in a press release. "City officials hope that all who pass by the field will pause to remember the heroes honored there. They invite the public to walk among the flags and read the dedications accompanying them." The $30 flags are available at cityofbowie.org/flags. The city will donate any extra proceeds to the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry and Emergency Assistance Fund. Starting Tuesday, June 8, participants can pick up their flags at City Hall during business hours. The commemorative exhibit will pop up in the open field across from Bowie High School, between Annapolis Road and Sussex Lane. Visitors can park on Sussex Lane.
