ABINGDON, MD — A pair of condominium buildings was destroyed in a fire that caused $2 million in damage in Abingdon, according to officials. Investigators said 24 residences were uninhabitable due to the inferno in the 3500 block of Thomas Pointe Court. A resident at The Pointe discovered the fire at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, May 22, according to the state fire marshal. While investigators determined the fire started outside on a third-floor balcony, the precise cause remains under investigation. Approximately 60 firefighters, led by Abingdon Fire Company, responded to the two-alarm blaze, officials reported. Within an hour and a half, they said the fire had been declared under control. Two condo buildings were destroyed, according to the fire marshal, who said each contained three floors. Authorities said the fire alarm went off, and the premises was equipped with smoke alarms, but it was unclear whether those activated. Residents are being helped by the American Red Cross and Harford County Disaster Assistance, officials said. The incident in Abingdon was one of two major fires in the Bel Air area Saturday night.
