AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Transportation's "Click It or Ticket" campaign will kick off Monday, reminding people to wear their seatbelts ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
TxDOT announced Monday it will enforce the campaign May 24 to June 6. Officers will be ramped up to ticket drivers and passengers who aren't wearing their seatbelts, even at night.
The decision to implement the campaign this week is a result of a lot of people hitting the roads ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
TxDOT officials said it saw a 16 percent increase in deaths of unbuckled motorists in 2020 compared to 2019. There were 1,073 deaths in 2020 and 926 deaths in 2019.
The "Click It Or Ticket" campaign will celebrate its 19th anniversary this year. Since its inception in 2002, the percentage of Texans who wear their seatbelts rose from 76 percent to 91 percent, TxDOT officials report.
