New Sidewalk Program To Be Discussed At May 24 Planning Session

Press release from the City of Wheaton: To increase safety for pedestrians and improve the walkability of our community, the City of Wheaton has been working toward a goal of having sidewalks on at least one side of every street by adding new sidewalks where none exist. In past years, efforts focused on areas closest to schools to provide safe walking routes for children. Now that the previous programs are complete, the City Council is looking to adopt a new prioritization plan to address other areas throughout the community in need of sidewalks. The City Council will discuss a new prioritization program at its May 24 Planning Session, which will be at 7 p.m. at City Hall. This meeting will also be available via Zoom and will be recorded. The meeting agenda and supporting materials are now available on the City's website, and the Zoom link is available at the top of the agenda. Using safety as the top priority, the program being proposed would use a rating system incorporating many factors to determine the order in which areas receive sidewalks. City staff have identified approximately 70 areas in Wheaton to receive sidewalks through a multi-year program.
