Newport's Marble House, Elms Lawn To Reopen For Summer Season

NEWPORT, RI — Just in time for the start of what would have been the summer season for Newport's historic elite, one of the famed "summer cottages" is getting ready to reopen to the public. Marble House, the historic home of the Vanderbilts, will reopen Friday, allowing visitors a peek inside upper-class summer life during the Gilded Age. The same day, the grounds and gardens of The Elms will open, as well. The outdoor areas of The Elms will be part of the Preservation Society of Newport County's "Stroll the Gardens and Grounds" package, which allows access to the outdoor areas of up to three of the following properties: Green Animals Topiary Garden, The Breakers, Marble House or The Elms. "What a great occasion it will be to have four of our properties available again for people to visit," said Trudy Coxe, the CEO and executive director of the Preservation Society. "This will be a major milestone for us as we continue to rebound from the steep decline in tourism that happened in 2020." The interior of The Elms is set to reopen starting June 19, which will mark the first time that four of the Preservation Society's mansions will be open at once since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
