Dublin Police To Conduct DUI Checkpoint Over Holiday Weekend

DUBLIN, CA — Heading into a long Memorial Day holiday weekend, Dublin Police Services will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint this weekend in the area of Dublin Boulevard and Civic Plaza, police officials announced on Monday. The DUI checkpoint will run until 7 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday as police officials attempt to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Checkpoint locations are selected based on the history of DUI arrests and crashes, police said. While the purpose of the checkpoint is not to make arrests but to promote public safety, officers will be on the lookout for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said. "The safety of our community is, and always will be, our mission," Dublin Police Capt. Nate Schmidt said in a news release. "We are looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is dangerous and puts others on the road at risk." In addition to alcohol, prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can impair a driver's ability to operate a vehicle, police said. Local residents are reminded to follow directions for use of prescriptions and to read labels that warn against driving or operating heavy machinery. Police also warn that although medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. If residents plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact their ability to drive safely, they should plan on staying at home, police said in the news release. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
