CHARLOTTE, NC — While the benefits of getting a COVID vaccine are priceless, the state of North Carolina is offering residents at some vaccination locations $25 for their efforts. In a new limited program, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is offering $25 Summer Cash Cards to offset the time and transportation costs associated with getting a first dose of vaccine, it said Monday. "Vaccines are the key to emerging from this pandemic and we must continue to do all that we can to get shots into arms," Governor Roy Cooper said in a statement. "I greatly appreciate the innovative work being done to encourage more people to get vaccinated." The program runs May 26 through June 8 at select vaccination sites in Mecklenburg, Guilford, Rowan and Rockingham counties. "Anyone 18 and older who gets their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination — or drives someone to their vaccination — will receive a $25 cash card after vaccination at a participating location while supplies last," DHHS said. "Cards are for the first dose only for both the person being vaccinated and the driver." The program offers incentives for those who help transport people to vaccination sites. Each time a driver takes someone to an appointment, they are also eligible for a cash card. "This helps offset the costs for those who help family, friends and neighbors find their spot for a vaccine and drive them to their shots," DHHS said. "There is no limit on the amount of times someone can drive people to a vaccination appointment; however, a driver will only receive one card per visit." The cash card campaign is one of several initiatives around the state aimed at spurring vaccinations. The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, for example, gave those getting a shot at its recent vaccination event a free ticket to the zoo. Other freebies offered for vaccination around the state include free drinks at breweries, a chance to win a free meal plan at a university and even a free car raffled off by Ottendorf Laboratorites, DHHS said.
