Description
Welcome to a slightly smaller re-boot of 2018's crowd-pleaser of a walk: "All is Flux(us)"! We all need to have a little fun now, don't we? And if we have a lot of fun this weekend, we'll offer some more of these :) Take five by participating in a series of Fluxus-inspired “compositions,” or spontaneous performances, as Dominic Inouye leads a group down Brady Street to activate its sidewalks and alleys with our bodies and everyday objects. Prepare to discover the street anew and to surprise passersby, who may become part of the performance, too. This “walk” (we’ll be doing ALL kinds of walking!) will certainly test your comfort zones--and that of those around you. If we gave away the “compositions,” they wouldn’t be spontaneous, to participants or the audience, so be okay with the darkness; ignorance is bliss sometimes, especially in our digitally saturated lives. This is an accessible walk for all participants. The walk starts at Swing Park (1737 N Water Street.) The length of Brady Street is about 0.5 miles. We will likely walk it multiple times in different ways. The walk will be canceled if it rains. On the day before our “fluxing,” look for a message from Dominic with instructions to bring with you a few (if possible) choice objects. WHAT’S FLUXUS? A radical interdisciplinary (anti)art movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Fluxus insisted, with the earlier Dadaists like Tristan Tzara, that “art is not the most precious manifestation of life. Art has not the celestial and universal value that people like to attribute to it. Life is far more interesting.” They rejected the artist as hero or redeemer, the art object as commodity, and blurred the boundaries between the “arts,” calling for a radical purging of such ideologies and the replacement of them with “art in the moment”: compositions of bodies in the present moment, bodies as performance. According to art historian Kristine Stiles, “Fluxus makes ordinary objects ‘anomolous,’ provoking, arousing, and vexing the mind and simultaneously energizing the body to animate novel ways and means to view and experience the world." Jane's Walk MKE COVID-19 Policy Pre-registration is required for all participants. All participants must wear a mask. Based on the leader's discretion in where your walk will take place, leaders have limited attendee numbers to ensure those from different households can socially distance. For tours between 10-25 attendees, the leader will either use an audio system or conference call so participants can socially distance at the recommended minimum 6 ft but still hear. If you feel ill or suspect you may be experiencing symptoms of a COVID-19 infection, please do not enter attend any walks. ___________________________________________ Find more walks, bikes, paddles, and rolls at janeswalkmke.org/calendar or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pg/janeswalkmke/events/ Find out how to lead your OWN at janeswalkmke.org Sign up to receive Jane’s Walk MKE newsletters at http://eepurl.com/giPDKL ___________________________________________ As a program of Milwaukee Turners at Turner Hall, Jane’s Walk MKE is part of a worldwide movement of over 200 cities hosting free, resident-led walking tours inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs.
