Volunteer To Support Leon's Triathlon
NWIPA is looking for experienced paddlers who are willing to support Leon's Triathlon on June 6th. Our role is to position ourselves on Wolf Lake, keeping swimmers on course and be extra eyes for the water rescue teams from the Lake County Sheriff and Hammond Police. In addition they request that we tow along small floats they will be providing in the event one of the swimmers needs something to hang on (NOT our boats!) if they ingest some water or become fatigued.
Leon's is a major regional event, first held in 1983. Participants classes include Para-triathaletes, Military & First Responders, and the Indiana State Championships for all Age Groups and High School athletes.
You must be an experienced paddler with your own boat. We will launch from the Illiana Yacht Club at 6:30 am and paddle across the lake (about 3,000 feet) for a briefing and safety meeting at 7:15. The first wave is the olympic course and begins at 8:05. This group will likely require the least amount of help and should be out of the water by 9:00. The next two waves are the shorter courses and begin at 8:35 with the last swimmers off the course by 9:50 am. You do not have to be a NWIPA member to participate.
Please use the Register button above if you can commit to this important event. If you have questions about volunteering, call David Klein at (219) 218-2651. Read more about the event at https://leonstriathlon.com
