Description

I’m writing this to you, our visitors to the area, because a full page ad in one of the local papers said it was you who wanted our seagulls gone. We’ve already lost all but a fraction of one percent of the crows and seagulls we used to have. Spikes on all the roofs, falcons hired to harass the birds daily, workers up on roofs destroying nests/eggs, and on and on have done the trick. I miss the birds. I miss the seagulls talking to one another, caring for their chicks, announcing their returns with food for everyone. And I miss the very intelligent crows - more intelligent than a lot of humans. But unlike humans, the seagull and crow couples stay together for life. I’ll never forget the day workers in a B&B kitchen threw food out into a busy road by the water. A seagull from the roof landed to pick it up, but was run over instead, his mangled body left in the road like a piece of trash. The mate swooped down and let out the most haunting cry. Too many of the seagulls we have left are run down on our streets. As I sit listening to very loud music from a nearby park, where people are dancing and the birds have been eliminated, and look at the tall building nearby, full of multi-million dollar condos, where birds have been replaced by 5G cell towers that bring on headaches and ringing in my ears, I think maybe America’s last hometown has gone the way of the birds. It is no more.
