DETROIT — Keith Appling, a former star player on the Michigan State University Spartans men's basketball team, is considered a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 66-year-old man in Detroit Saturday night. Police in Detroit identified the 29-year-old Appling as a suspect in the shooting that unfolded in the 13200 block of Whitcomb Street as Appling, The Detroit News and others have reported. The 66-year-old and 29-year-old were in a "verbal altercation," police said in a statement, according to the News, that turned physical around 7:10 p.m. The fatal victim was shot multiple times, police said, according to the report. Appling fled the area near Schoolcraft and Greenfield Road a newer model tan Buick Regal, the report stated, citing police. A relative's statements to police led to Appling being considered the suspect, The News reported. Appling was considered armed and dangerous after the shooting, according to The Detroit Free Press. He was described by police as 6'2", 200 pounds with brown eyes and black hair, the Free Press reported. The fatal victim had not been identified as of Sunday morning.
