Press release from the Town of Plymouth: May 20, 2021 On April 29, 2021, the Water Division of the Plymouth Department of Public Works ("DPW") completed its fourth rounds of sampling for PFAS6 at each of its active water supply wells. PFAS are a group of man-made fluorinated organic chemicals that are found in a variety of products such as cookware, food packaging, stain repellents and firefighting foams. Although consumer products and food are considered the largest sources of human exposure to these chemicals, drinking water can be an additional source of exposure in communities where these chemicals have contaminated water supplies. On October 2, 2020, MassDEP published its public drinking water standard or Massachusetts Maximum Contaminant Limit (MCL) of 20 nanograms per liter (ng/L) for the sum of six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances called PFAS6. Public Water Suppliers are required to test for PFAS6 on a schedule based on population served. Plymouth was required to begin PFAS6 sampling on April 1, 2021. The Plymouth Water Division began conducting PFAS6 testing on February 25, 2020 as a proactive effort. All of Plymouth's sampling results have been below MassDEP's MCL of 20 ng/l. To date, 41 Public Water Systems in Massachusetts have detected PFAS6 over the established MCL.
