NEWTON, MA — A group in Newton is holding a rally to honor George Floyd and draw attention to systemic racism Saturday afternoon in Newton. "As we approach the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, we invite you to join us to honor the lives of people murdered by police—especially Black and brown people—both locally and across the country," an announcement from Defund NPD, a youth-led grassroots group advocating the reallocation of money from the Newton Police Department to underfunded social services. The group said they hope the event will draw attention to systemic racism, ignited by the fight to bring justice to Floyd and an end to state violence. "The struggle against white supremacy, led by Black organizers for decades, continues," the group said. "It will not end until we dismantle white supremacy." They will begin the rally at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lowell Park at the intersection of Lowell and Washington streets in Nonantum.
