UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Banana Republic will be the latest retail chain store to close on the Upper West Side. An employee at the American clothing and accessories retailer at 1976 Broadway, at West 67th Street, confirmed to Patch that the store will be closing in July. The employee did not specify what day in July, but they did say the store is offering 20 to 40 percent off all items until that day comes. Banana Republic closing its Upper West Side outpost was not unexpected, as the property, along with the nearby Gap at 1988 Broadway, were both put on the market in May 2020. Gap Inc. also owns the Banana Republic chain. A representative from Gap told ILoveTheUpperWestSide at the time that they were "looking thoughtfully at their real estate to support the best path forward for the company and currently have several store locations under review." In 2019, Gap announced it would be closing 230 locations across the country, with additional closures in the near future. There are no signs that the Gap at 1988 Broadway is closing. Banana Republic has nine other locations in Manhattan outside the soon closing spot on the Upper West Side. The majority of those locations are below 50th Street, with the nearest one to the UWS at 626 5th Avenue, between 50th and 51st Street. Here's more information about the still open Upper West Side location.
