MEDFORD, MA — The Medford Fire Department will observe Firefighters Memorial Sunday on June 13. The annual remembrance honors all active and retired Medford firefighters who have passed away during the last year. The 120-year tradition is sponsored by the Medford Firefighters Relief Association and Medford Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1032. The Relief Association, organized in 1893 to provide benefits to the wives of deceased members at a time when firefighters were unable to get life insurance, is one of the oldest organizations of its type in the United States. Walter Buckley, president of IAFF Local 1032, will be the master of ceremonies. Guest speakers will be Frank Giliberti, chief of the Medford Fire Department, Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn and Deputy Chief Brian Cronin. Tim Sullivan, pipe major of the Kevin Barry Band, and Matt Phelps will lead the procession and provide music during the service. The service will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Medford Firefighters Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery, with a breakfast to follow at Engine Five in South Medford. In the event of rain, the service will be held indoors at Engine Company Five, 0 Medford Street, South Medford. The public is invited.
