How To Help 93-Year-Old Woman, Grandson After House Fire

LINDENHURST, NY — A Lindenhurst man started a fundraising campaign to help a 93-year-old woman whose grandson was hurt and home was damaged in a fire earlier this month. The woman woke up to the smell of smoke after the fire broke out at her home on May 4. She pressed her Life Alert and the fire department responded to find her grandson passed out on the floor. The grandson was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical but stable condition. He had second and third-degree burns on over 40 percent of his body. The woman was also treated at the hospital and released. As a result, local resident Richie Borish started a GoFundMe page to help raise $5,000 to help his family. The fire was deemed an accident, however, the woman canceled her home insurance due to the taxes being too high for her to afford, according to the page. "A lot of family and friends have reached out to ask how they can help," he wrote on the page. "Since there was no insurance, the Borish family has to come out of pocket to fix the damage from the fire. The total estimate is over $20K, so anything anyone can pitch in to help out, it will be greatly appreciated." As of Friday, the page nearly reached its goal, raising a total of $4,895.
