Today's top 5 news stories for the Myrtle Beach area: The SkyWheel is open! Myrtle Beach's famed SkyWheel was undergoing renovations for the last several months. Fittingly, the fixed-up Wheel, that includes some snazzy new lights, and updated VIP gondola (where lots of marriage proposals happen) was unveiled on its 10th anniversary! (WPDE)As if Barefoot Landing didn't have enough restaurants, what's one more? The LandShark Bar and Grill opened its doors this week. It's located in the Harborwalk Village section of the complex with a perfect view of the pond. (MyHorryNews)With so many students missing out this past year due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are seeing record-setting enrollments for "summer school" programs throughout the area. Some students lagged behind, and all will get some much-needed in-person learning this summer to offset emotional problems caused by staying at home. (WBTW)St James High School phys ed teacher, Jacob Scheuer was named as Horry County 2022 Teacher of the Year! Congratulations Mr. Scheuer! (MyHorryNews)Squirrel! At least three thousand Santee Cooper customers lost power in the Pawley's Island area on Friday when a squirrel made its way into a substation. Power was restored in a few hours. (WMBF) This weekend's events in Myrtle Beach: SATURDAY, May 22nd: 2021 Global 6k for Water at Myrtle Beach State Park. This run-or-walk event is happening worldwide with thousands of people participating to raise funds for improving water systems globally. (8:00 am)The Blood Connection, in conjunction with The Circle Center, will host a blood drive at the Circle of Friends Center inside the Myrtle Beach Mall. "One pint saves four lives" and supplies go to area hospitals in and around the Grand Strand. (9:00 am)Rustic Roast Coffee Shop celebrates one year of business (and what a year to start a biz! Congrats to them!) Dogs from Grand Strand Humane Society will be on hand as well. First 100 customers get a free cupcake! (10:00 am)Beach Creative Workshop at Pawley's Island General Store. Another workshop where participants create flower blossom wall hangings from oyster shells on a 14"X14" wooden base. $50 for full in-person instruction, materials and tools. (10:30 am) MercyMe Live and Outside w/Micah Tyler at Pelican Stadium. MercyMe's first performance in over a year, with special guest Micah Tyler. (7:00 pm)North Myrtle Beach Community Band Pops in the Park at North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. Groups include a Woodwind quintet, a brass octet, a clarinet choir, a trumpet and tuba ensemble, and a saxophone choir. Free admission, bring a chair. (7:00 pm) SUNDAY, May 23rd: Rockin' Jump Trampoline Park and Champion Autism Network collab to bring you a sensory-friendly morning. This is the final Sunday of this weekly spring event. $10 for one hour, includes free therapist. (10:00 am)Yappy Hour at World of Beer in North Myrtle Beach. This dog-friendly event gets you a free German pretzel if you bring a canine pal! Free admission, besides. Well-behaved pups, please.
