NORRISTOWN, PA — A community garden project in Ambler is among 23 initiatives across Montgomery County that was awarded sizable grants this week to improve sustainability and infrastructure. The Arch Street Greenway Corridor Improvement received $32,000 through the 2021 iteration of the Montco 2040 Implementation Grants. "Norristown submitted an expanded scope of a previously submitted (and approved) project to provide a promenade along the Saw Mill River Run culvert," officials said in a announcing the grant. "These additional funds will pay for a crosswalk and decorative fence along the canal to better tie into the Schuylkill River Trail." More than $2.5 million was awarded in the latest round of the program, which seeks to support municipalities in reaching various physical improvements, including sustainability initiatives and more closely connected communities. Categories for projects included the Walk/Bike Montco, Downtown and Community Destination, and Adaptation and Resiliency. "When we started the Montco 2040 Implementation Grant Program, I was excited to see what kind of projects would come out of the program and how municipalities would take up the county's offer to help implement the comprehensive plan at the local level," Montgomery County Commissioner Val Arkoosh said in a statement. "Now at year six, we have seen a number of fantastic projects funded through this initiative." A total of 95 grants and $10.2 million in funding has been disbursed across 46 municipalities since the program's launch in 2016.
