Press release from the City of Syracuse: May 19, 2021 Mayor Walsh applauds restoration of local hiring preferences on federal transportation projects Statement by Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh on announcement by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg reinstating pilot program for local hiring on federal transportation projects: "I applaud President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg for bringing back local hiring preferences for those in economically or socially disadvantaged communities on federal transportation infrastructure projects. This is a major victory for Syracuse as the start of work on the Interstate 81 viaduct project comes closer. Because of this local hiring program, we can raise the standard of living for families in the City of Syracuse by ensuring more people get to work on the project. I want to thank Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for keeping this issue at the forefront of national attention and leading the way in restoring a local hiring provision. I am hopeful it is a step toward permanently lifting the federal ban on local hire. In Syracuse, we have been working hard with community partners and will continue full steam ahead to prepare our local recruitment, training, and workforce development systems for this transformational opportunity."
