Description

How do fireflies produce their glow? Why are bats find their prey? Why are beavers a "keystone" species? Find out and see them on the MVT. How do fireflies produce their glow? Why are bats an important part of the ecosystem? Why are beavers a "keystone" species? Come find out on our firefly, beaver and bat walk. We'll meet at the corner of Abingdon and Slaters Lane outside of the Salvation Army Headquarters. After talking briefly about the different species of fireflies, beavers and bats, we'll take a short walk on the Mount Vernon Trail to show your our favorite locations for bat and firefly watching and show you where a beaver has shaped the environment on the trail. You'll get to see our special bat microphone that identifies different species based on the frequency of their echolocation. The walk is about 1 mile and will end by 9:45 p.m. Things to bring: Flashlight (preferably with red light setting). Reflective vest if you have one -- we will have some extras. Inclement Weather: In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled and notification will be sent by e-mail by 5 p.m. the day of the event. Getting there: By foot or bike: The meetup spot is located on the Mount Vernon Trail north of Old Town Alexandria. By public transportation: Take DASH bus AT5 to the Slaters Ln and W Abingdon Dr stop and walk .3 miles to the meetup spot. By car: There should be street parking available in the neighborhoods off Slaters Lane. Optional Pre-Event Gathering: There's an optional pre-event gathering at Rustico (827 Slaters Lane) at 8 p.m.
