MIAMI, FLA. — Miami Police are asking for public assistance in locating a man that police said followed a woman into her apartment building and then attempted to sexually assault her in her residence before the woman fought him off and caused the man to escape. Police released surveillance video from the apartment building which is located in the 1000 block of SE First Avenue on Wednesday, a day after the attack took place, police said. The man, who is described as being in his late 20s, having a thin build and who has a goatee and brown eyes, followed the woman onto the elevator of her building after she returned from jogging just before 7 p.m., police said. The video shows the man enter the elevator and pretend to be speaking with someone on his phone. He then followed the woman off of the elevator, police said, and as she attempted to enter her apartment, he forced his way inside, Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said on Thursday. @miamipd is requesting the assistance of anyone who can identify or may know the whereabouts of the subject pictured below. He told the woman she would hit her if she did not comply. The woman then attempted to break away and was hit, Fallat said, but managed to barricade herself in her bedroom. The woman then went out on the balcony of her apartment and screamed for help. Police received multiple 911 calls stating that a woman was screaming for help. The suspect was gone by the time police arrived and surveillance video shows him quickly leaving the apartment building. The woman suffered minor injuries in the attack, Fallat said. "The woman was very clever, very astute," Fallat told Patch on Thursday. "She did exactly what she was supposed to do – she called for help and tried to break away from him." Police are considering the incident isolated but are seeking help in locating the man, who was seen on video wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black shorts and red sneakers. Anyone with information on the man's whereabouts is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous, and may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
