20% of our nation’s population lives in a rural area, a population that lives with significant health and behavioral health disparities. Why Mental Health First Aid for Rural Communities?While spread throughout our country, rural populations are an important under-served population that lives with significant health and behavioral health disparities. But rural Americans have strengths as well, including close-knit family ties and a strong sense of community. Mental Health First Aid for Rural Communities builds upon these strengths by increasing knowledge about mental health and substance abuse issues and decreasing negative perceptions. This workshop teaches individuals how to notice and respond to signs of mental health and addiction changes with a specific focus on the cultural and environmental factors related to life in rural areas. The course teaches you how to apply the ALGEE Action Plan: • Assess for risk of suicide or harm • Listen non-judgmentally • Give reassurance and information • Encourage appropriate professional help • Encourage self-help and other support strategies ________________________________________________________________________________________________ DATES: Saturday, June 12 TIMES: 9:00am - 6:00pm Upon completion of the full 8-hour course, attendees will be nationally certified to provide Mental Health First Aid in their communities. Registration includes: MHFA Manual, additional materials, and course completion certificate. This certificate can be presented to your governing board or employer as attendance of 8-hours towards continuing education credits in multiple disciplines. NOTE: Attendees MUST be present for the entire 8-hour class in order to receive certification. Attendees MUST be a minimum of age 18.
