LOS ANGELES, CA — A fast-moving brush fire broke out west of Lancaster Thursday morning driven by wind gusts up to 50 mph. In just two hours, the blaze ballooned to 300 acres. Firefighters contended with strong wins trying to hold the fire at bay as it threatened structures in the Fairmont area west of Lancaster. By 2 p.m., crews had made solid progress in stopping the forward progress of the blaze. "Crews continue to make good progress with much of the fire activity diminished," reported the Los Angeles County Fire Department. "Winds remain high. No injuries reported. County Fire Department (@LACoFDPIO) May 20, 2021 Los Angeles County firefighters have declared it a third-alarm blaze with the potential to spread to 1,000 acres. Structure-protection crews are staging as the flames advance on the Wee Vill Market on West Avenue D. The blaze has been dubbed the Wee Vill Fire. The fire was reported about 9:30 a.m. near state Route 138 and 210th Street West, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. By 11:30, it had reached about 300 acres. Structure-protection crews staged in the area as the flames advanced on the Wee Vill Market on West Avenue D. The blaze has been dubbed the Wee Vill Fire. A wind advisory was issued near the Golden State (5) Freeway from Lake Hughes Road to state Route 138, according to the California Highway Patrol. State Route 138 was closed at Gorman Post Road as a precaution, the CHP reported. It's the second major brush fire to hit the Antelope Valley this month.
