FEMA Says Yonkers Armory To Stop Coronavirus Vaccinations

WHITE PLAINS, NY — While the number of infections of the new coronavirus continues to drop in Westchester County, the federal government is closing down one of the mass vaccination sites. County Executive George Latimer said Thursday at the second of his weekly news conferences that the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the mass vaccination clinic at the Yonkers Armory will close Tuesday. As of Sunday, the Yonkers Armory has administered 68,400 doses of the vaccine since it was opened in early March. Latimer said the Westchester County Center and the two county clinics will still continue giving out the vaccine. There are also numerous other places where one can get the shot, including pop-ups clinics and pharmacies. He said coronavirus infections continue to drop dramatically in the county. According to state numbers released Thursday, there were 782 active cases of the virus in Westchester. Monday saw 922 and a week ago there were 1,182. "To give you an idea how small the number of new infections are," Latimer said, "yesterday 7,701 people were tested and only 57 positives were reported." He said that is less than a 1 percent positive rate of infection. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19-related illness reported Thursday were 58, down from 72 one week ago and 115 two weeks ago. Latimer said there were no fatalities reported overnight.
